Clash within Islam
Majority of Muslims and non-Muslims often mistake Sufism as sect of Islam. Sufism is an aspect or dimension of Islam. People following this spiritual dimension of Islam can be found in all the four major Sunni schools of law namely Hanafi, Maaliki, Shafai and Hanbali as well as Shi’ite. And this virtue of spirituality made it vulnerable to criticism from Muslim clergy, who felt threatened of losing influence over the masses. Over the centuries, territories where Sufi orders seeded Islam encompass the largest concentrations of Muslims.
Europe's social reservation
Economic collapse of European states like Greece has rebound the conventional question: Why is Turkey still out of the European Union? The question becomes more pertinent when in the times of recent global economic crisis; Turkey registered the highest development ratio after China last year.
Diplomats at the European Commission in Brussels may never run out of excuses for delaying Turkey’s entry in the EU. The very admission of new members such as Hungary and Bulgaria have little to show off compared to politically stable, prosperous Turkey.
What women want!
Repeatedly, Muslim women have defied the stereotypes about niqab (Islamic face veil) by asserting that modest dress is their choice and a right they are fighting for with their governments, their societies, and yes, even their husbands. Many women who cover are actually converts to Islam; often, they are Anglo-European women who have embraced the Islamic principles of modesty.
My Trip to the Revolution
“I have come to terms with the fact that I will not see democracy in Egypt in my lifetime,” told me Egyptian publisher Hisham Kassem at the end of an interview for PBS’ World Focus in 2008.
I remembered those words as I heartily celebrated the fall of the regime in Tahrir Square on February 11th and I smiled to myself. I had come all the way from New York to be a part of the revolution, not expecting that the stubborn Egyptian President would step down while I was there.
Sweet scent of Arab spring
I raise my voice wherever I can for people to learn, know and, own human rights as a way of life, for women and men to use this holistic overarching knowledge to cross the bridges of change; assuring and sustaining a better future for humanity.
Israeli perspectives on Arabs social revolts
There has been significant disjuncture between political and some media responses to the Arab social revolutions and wider popular opinion in Israel.
The Netanyahu government’s reaction to the revolutionary upsurge in Egypt was widely regarded domestically as ham-fisted. It vacillated between open support for Mubarak as a key regional ally and guarantor of the Camp David Accords and garbled recognition of the justice of the protestors’ demands – the latter seemingly promoted by US goading behind the scenes.
